Passages by Sylvana Christopher

Passages is a dance choreographed for National Choreography Month 2024. Sylvana Christopher of Vigorous Roots rocks, melts, and bounds to a sultry introspective tune called “Spin of the Wheel, Tick of the Wind” by The Nicole Saphos Band featuring Nicole Saphos as lead vocalist on upright bass, Ele Rubenstein on drums, John Lee on electric guitar, and Maureen Andary and Sara Curtin on backup vocals.

Seeds of this dance germinated while Sylvana taught Movement to Duke Ellington School of the Arts Theatre Department 1st years and 2nd years. The solo reflects on the passage of time and memories of courtship, quieting a babe at a live recording, and balancing care for the elderly. Transitions between past, present, and future responsibilities, juggling acts, and letting go are the stuff that make life tick.
